Lactate Threshold Testing Clinic
We are So Excited to Announce our very first Lactate Threshold Testing
Clinic at become fit: Sunday, February 15th from 12:30 – 6:00 pm. We
are pleased to have partnered with Gemini Training Systems – they
bring expertise and experience in athletic coaching, testing and training.
Call us at 482-3868 to find out more.
Why Test?
A finely tuned and planned training program is a key element in
maximizing your training time and improving performance. One of the
most important parts of a structured training plan is to train at the
correct intensity. Using a heart rate monitor enables athletes to monitor
their true intensity during workouts and races, making training decisions
based on FACT instead of FEEL.
When using a heart rate monitor, it is crucial to establish training zones
based around your lactate threshold (LT), often times referred to as
anaerobic threshold (AT). Some athletes use formulas, such as “220-age”
or “percentage of actual maximum heart rate” to determine their zones.
Truth is, all this guesstimating pales in comparison to the actual data you
can generate from a self-test.
Lactate Threshold
Technically speaking, Lactate Threshold is the point during increasingly
intensive exercise at which lactate begins to accumulate in the blood.
Your body can no longer process lactate. This point is characterized by
heavy breathing, a deterioration of form (run, cycling, etc) and a slight
burn.

WHAT: FREE CLINIC ON AERODYNAMICS IN SPORT WITH Colorado Premiere Training’s ROBBY KETCHELL

WHEN: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2009 at 6:30PM

WHERE: BOULDER CYCLE SPORT 4580 Broadway Street Boulder, CO 80304

Boulder Cycle Sport and Colorado Premier Training present a FREE clinic on aerodynamics in cycling, with Aerodynamics Performance Analyst and Premier Level Coach, Robby Ketchell of Colorado Premier Training (CPT).  This will be a free event open to anyone interested in understanding the misconceptions of aerodynamics in sport, and how applying this knowledge can instantly increase speed in road, track and time trial performances.

Following the clinic, there will be a sign-in sheet for a very limited number of bike fit sessions that we will hold at Boulder Cycle Sport on that following Saturday and Sunday, February 21 & 22. Each day will have 4 time slots. The ‘aero bike fit’ is unique to looking at aerodynamic advantageous with respect to both equipment and position.  CPT will make equipment recommendations on location. Cost for the aero bike fit is $300 for each bike. Throughout the process, we also educate the athlete on aerodynamics in general and tips that apply to them specifically.

Robby Ketchell
Aerodynamics Specialist, Premier Level Coach and Biomechanist

Robby is a Premier Level Coach, biomechanist, and aerodynamics performance analyst with CPT, and manages the Biomechanics and Aerodynamics lab at the CPT Wind Tunnel in Fort Collins, CO USA.

A former professional road and track cyclist, Robby has changed roles from an avid competitor to devoting his time to power and aerodynamics research, coaching, and performance analysis. He brings 13 years of racing experience as a cyclist and has won two national championships and several top performances in nationally recognized events.

Years of racing, training, and traveling with some of the world’s most successful cyclists gives Robby the experience and character to lead motivated athletes to athletic achievement. Just some of the athletes Robby has worked with include Dave Zabriski, David Millar, Tom Danielson, Chris Baldwin, Christian VandeVelde, Magnus Backstedt, Nathan O’Neill, Dotsie Bausch, Katie Mactier, Christian VandeVelde, Tom Peterson and Maartjin Maaskant.

Robby’s research interests are in aerodynamics of cycling and the biomechanics of altering a cyclist’s body position, the correlation between heart rate and power as a single training variable, and performance analysis. He has authored an impressive list of scientific reviews on biomechanical efficiency and presentations on such topics as exercise physiology, biomechanics, and endurance training and competition.

Robby’s second passion is in promoting clean sport. He is the President of the United Society for Fair Play, where he leads a team in creating awareness of the physical and social consequences of illegal performance enhancing drug use. He firmly believes that in order to free sport of illegal drug use, athletes need to learn how to become successful without resorting to illegal and potentially life threatening behaviors.

Ciclismo Racing Adds Talent for the 2009 Campaign

2nd Year Team Focused on Breakout Season

FORT COLLINS, CO. – January 28, 2009 – Ciclismo Racing, the country’s second-ranked men’s amateur stage racing team, today announced the addition of three pro-level riders to its 2009 roster. Nick Frey, Alexander Hagman, and Ben Kneller have all agreed to contracts to ride for the Fort Collins, Colorado-based Category 1 team.

“These three riders add significant experience, depth, and character to our already impressive Category 1 roster,” said Andy Clark, Director of Sport for Ciclismo Racing. “With the addition of Frey, Hagman, and Kneller, Ciclismo Racing has a clear shot at being the best amateur stage racing team in the United States in 2009.”

Hagman, 25, an Aspen, Colorado native and graduate of Fort Lewis College, raced for Toshiba-Santo p/b Herbalife in the 2008 season. Highlights from his 2008 campaign include a third place general classification (GC) finish at The Vuelta Puebla and a top 20 GC finish at the U.S. Pro Road Race Championships.

“I am really happy to be a part of Ciclismo Racing”, Alexander said. “I expect big things from our team. We have a lot of talent and I can’t wait to unleash our arsenal.”

Frey, 21, an Iowa native, is a senior mechanical and aerospace engineering student at Princeton University and co-president of the Princeton cycling team. He was the 2007 national time-trial champion for men under 23 years of age and aims to recapture his title with Ciclismo Racing in 2009.

Frey raced professionally for Look / Time Pro Cycling Team in 2008. After battling injuries early in the season, Frey broke through with a podium finish at the Louisville NRC Criterium while lapping the field in the process. Even though he fractured his pelvis in a crash the next day, Frey returned to racing and earned a top 20 finish at the U.S. men’s professional time-trial championships in August 2008.

Frey is just as impressive off the bike. He is co-founder of Sol Cycles, a company that designs and builds bamboo bikes. What started as a bike-building project for an engineering design course is now turning into a viable business venture for Frey and three of his Princeton classmates. See www.solcycles.com for additional information.

“I am going to use my background in cycling as well as my Princeton engineering background to establish Sol as a top bike company.  I love talking to people about the bikes,” he admitted.  I think that elite/pro cycling and a bamboo bike company will go hand-in-hand.”

Kneller, (24), a Durango, Colorado native, joins Ciclismo Racing from Jittery Joes professional team in Atlanta.  Last year, Ben spent most of the season riding for his teammates, which seems to be just fine with him.

“I really enjoy the team aspect of road racing and how everyone has to work together for a result,” Kneller acknowledged. “I feel that with the team structure and riders of Ciclismo Racing, we will be able to get some good results in 2009. It seems like it is a close group of people and that will only aid in our success.”.

Director of Sport, Andy Clark, was quick to point out, “Ben showed that he is much more than a workhorse when he took the top podium spot at the Valley of the Sun time-trial in 2008. I expect big things for Ben this year, we’re going to make sure that Ben gets the opportunity and the support to be successful at a whole new level.”

Rounding out Ciclismo Racing’s team roster for 2009 are:

· Sprinting specialist Phil Mann (2007 and 2008 National Collegiate Criterium Champion);

· Climber and natural leader on the road, Brad Cole (2007 Endurance Mountain Bike National Champion);

· Climbing specialist and attack threat, Rolf Eisinger (1st KOM points 2008 Green Mt SR and 3rd KOM points 2008 Cascade KOM);

· Climber and time trial threat, Jarred Berger (2nd GC Amateur 2008 Tour of the Gila);

· Climbing specialist, Ian Gray (3rd GC Amateur 2008 Tour of the Gila);

· The “Mailman” Paul Esposti (8th 2008 Criterium Championships); and,

· Team workhorse, Dan Workman (1st GC 2008 Rocky Mountain Collegiate Conference).

“We have a lot of great, young talent on this team,” Clark explained, “and we have guys who truly enjoy working for each other. Coaching a talented group of guys is one thing.  Coaching a group of guys who are talented and motivated to work together as a cohesive unit is our recipe for success.”

Team co-owner Rob Ganger echoed Clark’s enthusiasm. “From the beginning, we knew we wanted to create a sense of family in our team culture,” Ganger said. “The riders have really taken that to heart, and it shows both on and off the bike.”

The Ciclismo Racing management team includes team co-owner Rob Ganger of Denver, Director of Sport and co-owner Andy Clark of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Director of Communications Rob Noble of Fort Collins, Colorado. Ciclismo Racing is privately funded and is actively soliciting corporate partnerships for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Plan B

Fort Collins is working on becoming a Platinum Level Bicycle Friendly Community having a Plan B would put us another step closer to obtaining that goal.

From Rick Price of the Bike Co-op.

But you gotta see this system – the next generation of bike sharing: Plan B” for B-Cycle.

So click through to the www.PlatinumBikePlan.Blogspot.com then on through to B-Cycle, then click on the “Who Wants It More?”

When I voted Jan. 27 I doubled the votes for Fort Collins – to two! That’s right, two. Boulder had 55 votes! Yikes. Please get in there and vote today. Then ask them to send your vote to the Mayor.

GT Dirt Collation

The good folks at GT MTB Bikes are looking for some workin stiff types to represent their brand at the local mtb races this summer.  It looks like a pretty good deal.

25 01 2009

I can’t believe it’s almost February!

Sorry about the lack o updates, but there are two reasons for that.

A) There really isn’t that much going on right now, just a bunch of people riding around in the cold.  We had 16-18 show for the Oval yesterday.

B) I have been spending the quiet a bit of time on the new site.  Should be ready fairly soon.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. For more information on Salmonella, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Web site at http://www.cdc.gov/ or call 800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636).

The Next Big Thang

14 01 2009

I have been looking all over the place for the best way to document and post MTB trails in the area and have decided that Net Cairns http://netcairns.com/wiki/index.php?title=NetCairnsis probably the best way.   So far only a few local trails have been mapped.  In order to get a better database of FTC MTB rides I have cooked up yet another way to give away free stuff.

New Belgium Brewery has been a supporter of all things bike for a long time and they have stepped up yet again and given some cool stuff to the site.  I am going to give a New Belgium  jersey and case of beer to the winner of the following contest.

Here’s what you gotts to do.

*Go to http://netcairns.com/wiki/index.php?title=NetCairns
*Find a local trail (try to keep in within 30 miles of the Fort) that hasn’t been mapped and map it.  I’m talkin full details, do your research and fill out all the sections. Top to bottom.  Head to toe………
when you are done send us an email and I’ll drop your name into the hat.  On February 1st I’ll pick a winner from all of the mappers.
*If you have already mapped a  local ride on Net Cairns shoot us an email

Once we have all/most of the trails mapped I’ll add them to the site.  I’m pretty sure the guys at Net Cairns will be pretty jazzed too.

Hey Roadies, would you be interested in the same sort of contest only using road routes?  We might do the same thing using mapmyride.com if I get some positive feedback.

Thanks and happy mapping
